It's well known in the hunting community that changes in weather influence deer movement. A cold snap in fall and early winter, especially after a bout of warmer weather, can create the perfect storm for the ideal deer-hunting experience. When a cold front moves through an area, it brings more than just a change in air temperature. That front is also greatly influenced by barometric pressure, wind, and altitude.
The Impact of Weather on Whitetail Deer
Whitetail deer can change along with the weather during the course of the hunting season. While deer hunting is a learning experience, the weather can impact deer behavior and increase your luck of getting that trophy buck - especially when it comes to bow hunting.
During an experiment conducted by the website Deer and Deer Hunting, weather variables were examined to determine how it impacts hunting success. Three of those variables include barometric pressure, temperature variable and wind speed. This is a summary of the discoveries:
- Barometric pressure was the single biggest indicator of scoring trophy bucks, with the best barometric pressure ranging from 29.2 to 29.7. Change in barometric pressure system signals whitetail deer that impending weather is on the way, which sends them out to get food for survival.
- Temperature provides the best hunting conditions when it is between the average temperature and 5 degrees above average.
- Wind velocity (wind speed) provides the best hunting conditions when it is under 8 mph. On the contrary, wind speeds lower than 4 mph decrease chance of hunting success.
