USE CASE: Worker Safety in a Boiler Room – Kestrel Heat Stress Monitoring System

Industry: Manufacturing

Environment: Indoor Boiler Room

Challenge: High ambient temperatures and minimal airflow created significant heat stress risks for maintenance crews working near active boilers.

Solution: An Industrial Hygienist conducted a two-week assessment using the Kestrel® Heat Stress Monitoring System. The system included a Kestrel 5400 mounted in the boiler room and a wall-mounted tablet displaying real-time WBGT, heat index, temperature, and humidity data via the Kestrel LiNK app. The consultant monitored live graphs and shifting data trends to identify high-risk periods during each shift.

Results:

  • Identified peak heat exposure times and poor ventilation zones
  • Informed adjustments to job rotation, hydration protocols, and rest schedules
  • Logged data was used to develop a Heat Safety Action Plan aligned with ACGIH guidelines built into the 5400
  • Improved crew awareness and safety compliance

Outcome: The facility now uses the full Kestrel system for daily monitoring and ongoing protection of workers in high-heat areas.
