Your First Time Using the Kestrel 5400: What to Know & What to Do
When it comes to heat safety, accuracy matters most. The Kestrel 5400 Heat Stress Tracker with LiNK provides reliable, on-site Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) measurements exactly where people work or play. Built-in guidelines, customizable alerts, and data logging so you can make informed, confident, and trackable decisions. Here's how to get the most from your 5400 the very first time you power it on.
Step 1: Power On and Set Preferences
The 5400 is designed for easy deployment to prevent heat-related illness. Watch this video for a full introduction to using your new Kestrel 5400: Kestrel 5400 Heat Stress Tracker | Quick Start Tutorial
- Power Up: Remove the battery door & insert the included AA battery. Press the bottom left button to power on the unit. Familiarize yourself with the main display and navigation buttons.
- Calibrate the Compass: Under “Systems” in Settings, select “Compass Cal” and follow the steps on the screen to calibrate. It involves rotating the device upright for 30 seconds.
- Set Preferences: Also under “Systems” settings, choose your preferred units, set the date/time, and display measurements.
- Select Indoor or Outdoor WBGT: While on the WBGT screen, select the center button and use the right and left arrows to toggle between indoor or outdoor WBGT. This will depend on where you are monitoring heat stress.
- Select Your Zone: Also under the same screen, use the center button to select zones and use the right and left arrows to toggle between the appropriate guideline—Athletic, Military, or ACGIH (Occupational). This ensures that the flag colors and threshold alerts align with your operational standards.
- Set High-Heat Alerts: Program audible or visual alerts to notify you when WBGT exceeds safe levels based on your zone. From the home screen, press the center button, scroll to Alerts. Use the center button to select the light and/or buzzer. Use the left and right arrows to select the zone trigger (Black, red, orange, yellow, green).
Step 2: Take Your First WBGT Reading
Accurate placement is key to meaningful WBGT data.
- Mount on Tripod for Consistency: For continuous monitoring, use a tripod or vane mount. You can also do spot checks while holding the unit.
- Allow for Airflow: Keep the 5400 away from your body or other heat sources. Make sure to remove the impeller cover before conducting measurements.
- Indoor and Outdoor Monitoring: Your 5400 is designed for indoor or outdoor heat stress monitoring. Ensure the corresponding indoor or outdoor WBGT measurement is selected for your environment.
- Allow Unit to Equilibrate: Allow your unit to equilibrate in the environment you intend to measure for 15 minutes before taking your first reading. This is standard and recommended by the Korey Stringer Institute.
Step 3: Interpret and Act on the Data
Your 5400 doesn't just measure WBGT; it helps you recognize when to act before injuries occur. It serves as a first line of defense against heat illness by providing clear, on-site insight into heat stress conditions. If you have a Bluetooth-enabled model, you can manage and document your data using the free Kestrel LiNK App.
- Download the LiNK App: If you have a Kestrel 5400 with LiNK, download the free app and seamlessly pair your device.
- Apple iOS App: Apple iOS App
- Android App: Android App
- Easy-to-Read Dashboard & WBGT Zone: View all your data in a single dashboard or list view, with the ability to customize which measurements are displayed. Within the WBGT tile, you can quickly see your current heat stress zone based on the guideline settings selected earlier.
- View Multiple Devices at Once: If you have multiple Kestrel units deployed, the LiNK app allows you to view them on one screen. Use the Multi-Device tab to select which measurements and devices you want to display.
⚠ Safety Tip: WBGT accounts for humidity, air temperature, and radiant heat, making it far more accurate for assessing heat stress risk than heat index alone.
Step 4: Use LiNK for Easy Reporting
LiNK adds simple, reliable recordkeeping to your heat safety workflow.
- Capture or Record Data: Take snapshots of current conditions or record live data for compliance documentation or later review.
- Export Data: Save and export readings in CSV or PDF format for training records, reports, or regulatory requirements.
Step 5: Keep It Field-Ready
Your 5400 is built for rugged use. Keep it in top shape with a little care.
- Clean Sensors Regularly: Use a soft cloth or brush to remove dust from the impeller and sensor openings.
- Store Properly: Keep it dry and protected when not in use, with the impeller cover in place.
- Calibrate Annually: For mission-critical use, plan for a yearly factory calibration to maintain peak accuracy. For calibration services, click here.
